End of an Era: French Studio Spiders Shuts Down After 18 Years Due to Publisher Financial Crisis
A Sudden Collapse for a Parisian Pioneer
The gaming industry is mourning the loss of a creative mainstay. Spiders, the renowned Parisian development studio founded in 2008, has officially announced the immediate cessation of all operations. After 18 years of contributing unique RPG experiences to the global market, the studio has been forced into liquidation, leaving a void in the French indie and AA gaming scene.
The Domino Effect: Nacon’s Financial Struggles
The closure of Spiders is not an isolated incident of creative failure, but rather a consequence of systemic financial instability at the top. The studio was under the tutelage of Nacon, a French publisher known for handling titles such as Robocop: Rogue City and Styx. Earlier this year, reports surfaced that Nacon was grappling with a staggering debt of 43 million euros.
As Nacon struggled to manage its insolvency and repay its massive debts, the financial pressure trickled down to its subsidiary studios. In a brutal economic climate marked by post-pandemic corrections and widespread industry layoffs, Spiders became the ‘fuse’ in Nacon’s desperate attempt to balance its books.
A Legacy of Ambition: From GreedFall to Steelrising
Spiders built a reputation for creating ambitious, atmospheric RPGs that punched above their weight class. They are most celebrated for the GreedFall series, a blend of colonial-era exploration and supernatural mystery. The studio recently released GreedFall: The Dying World—a title whose name now serves as a haunting irony given the studio’s current fate.
Beyond their flagship series, Spiders ventured into the challenging ‘Souls-like’ genre with Steelrising, proving their versatility and willingness to experiment with historical settings and complex combat mechanics.
Immediate Shutdown and Final Deliverables
The announcement of the closure was abrupt and definitive. In a statement shared via X (formerly Twitter), the studio confirmed: “To avoid any confusion, here is the confirmation of the liquidation of Spiders… we have received the green light. Concretely, this means the company is permanently ceasing its activities. We are stopping our operations immediately.”
Despite the shutdown, the studio confirmed that previously planned downloadable content (DLC) for GreedFall: The Dying World will still be released via Nacon, ensuring that the studio’s final project reaches its intended completion for the players.
Outcry from the Labor Union
The closure has sparked outrage among industry workers. The Video Game Workers Union (STV) has publicly condemned Nacon’s leadership, accusing them of gross mismanagement. The union claims that the publisher’s “contempt for game production” and “incompetence” actively sabotaged viable studios and jeopardized high-potential projects through poor financial planning and acquisition strategies.
The fall of Spiders serves as a grim reminder of the volatility within the current gaming ecosystem, where even established studios with nearly two decades of success can be erased by the financial instability of their parent companies.
