“You Can’t Create Art This Way”: The Visionary Behind The Witcher 3 Analyzes the Success of Crimson Desert and Clair Obscur

The Philosophy of Game Design: Art vs. Profit

In a recent insightful conversation with Gamesradar, Konrad Tomaszkiewicz—the former director of the legendary The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and a cornerstone of CD Projekt Red’s early success—shared his perspective on the current state of the gaming industry. Now leading his own independent venture, Rebel Wolves, Tomaszkiewicz has sounded a warning against the ‘cold’ approach to game development currently dominating the AAA landscape.

According to Tomaszkiewicz, the industry is facing a crisis of creativity. He argues that many modern studios are built on a foundation of financial projection rather than artistic passion. “The problem in this industry is that some people create studios thinking too much about how to make money,” he remarked. “It is a very cold approach to video games. You cannot create art this way.”

Identifying the ‘Fresh Blood’: Crimson Desert and Clair Obscur

While many AAA titles are criticized for feeling like iterative updates or ‘reheated’ versions of previous hits, Tomaszkiewicz pointed to two specific titles as beacons of originality: Crimson Desert and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Despite their differing genres and styles, both have generated immense hype and a ‘tidal wave’ of player interest.

The former Witcher director believes these games are succeeding because they defy the standard AAA corporate blueprint. Instead of copying existing successful formulas, they offer genuinely fresh experiences. Their success is a testament to a growing hunger among gamers for unformatted, original propositions that prioritize creative risk over safe, monetized gameplay loops.

Looking Ahead: Rebel Wolves and ‘The Blood of Dawnwalker’

This philosophy of “evolution through originality” is the driving force behind Tomaszkiewicz’s new project, The Blood of Dawnwalker. Scheduled for release on September 3, 2026, for PC, Xbox Series, and PS5, the game aims to blend the deep narrative richness of a dark fantasy RPG with innovative mechanics.

While it shares the DNA of a high-quality RPG similar to The Witcher 3, The Blood of Dawnwalker introduces a unique Gothic aesthetic and a compelling protagonist who is hybrid—human by day and vampire by night. One of its most intriguing features is a built-in 30-day in-game countdown, creating a race against time that leverages the day/night cycle in a way rarely seen in the genre.

By prioritizing artistic integrity and mechanical innovation, Rebel Wolves hopes to follow in the footsteps of titles like Crimson Desert, proving that the path to commercial success begins with a commitment to art first.
